Side Effects of Dutasteride
Sexual Side Effects
A small percentage of users report lower libido, erectile dysfunction, or changes in ejaculation — roughly similar rates to finasteride. Some studies also link it to lower sperm count and semen volume, worth discussing with a doctor if you’re planning to have children.
Other Side Effects
Breast tenderness or enlargement (gynecomastia) can happen in a small number of users — tell your doctor if it does. Mood changes, including depression, have also been reported. A large 2024 study of over 2.2 million patients found no clear proof that 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (the drug class dutasteride belongs to) cause these mood effects — but individual cases and regulatory caution mean it’s still worth raising with your doctor.
Malaysia safety alert: In September 2025, Malaysia’s NPRA issued a warning naming both finasteride and dutasteride, flagging a possible link to suicidal thoughts. This is separate from the 2022 US FDA warning, which covered finasteride only. If you feel low, depressed, or have any thoughts of self-harm while on dutasteride, stop taking it and contact your doctor right away. This is exactly why dutasteride should only be used under a doctor’s supervision — never bought or monitored on your own.
Rare but Serious Risks
Most side effects go away once you stop taking dutasteride. But a small number of people report symptoms that linger after stopping — this area has less long-term data than finasteride’s. Because dutasteride stays in your system longer, any side effects may also take longer to fade after you stop.
Who Should Avoid Dutasteride
Women Who Are or May Become Pregnant
Dutasteride isn’t approved for hair loss in women who are or could become pregnant. Like finasteride, it can harm the development of a male fetus — even through skin contact with a leaking or damaged capsule. Pregnant women shouldn’t handle the capsules at all.
Premenopausal Women
This group generally avoids dutasteride, for the same pregnancy-risk reasons above, combined with how long the drug stays in the body. Some postmenopausal women use it off-label under specialist care, but this isn’t standard.
Drug Interactions
Dutasteride doesn’t interact with many other drugs. But like finasteride, it lowers PSA levels — a number doctors use to screen for prostate cancer. Always tell any doctor ordering PSA tests that you’re taking dutasteride, so they can read the results correctly.

Price depends on whether you get the brand-name Avodart or a generic version, the form (oral, topical, or injectable), and where you fill the prescription.
