What is Acne?

Did you know that acne affects over 85% of Malaysians aged 12 to 24? A Journal of Primary Healthcare study reveals that facial acne is prevalent among 67.5% among adolescents in Malaysia and there is a rising incidence of facial acne with increasing age.
It can be extremely painful and even result in significant scarring in later years. Acne doesn’t discriminate, and sufferers range from teenagers right the way through to full-grown adults, both men and women alike.

How Harmful

Acne, or Acne Vulgaris, is one of the most common skin conditions worldwide today. Acne is a condition characterized by eruptions, bumps, lesions, redness and inflammation as well pustules if it gets infected. It often occurs during puberty, as this is when the sebaceous glands are activated. These glands are what produce oil to lubricate the skin, and this oily secretion is known as sebum. Excess sebum buildup as well as debris and bacteria can cause these glands to become blocked or infected which is when visible blemishes appear on the skin.

Our Treatment Solutions

Acne Clear Laser Treatment

Laser therapy is a technology that enables the management of inflammatory skin conditions without any discomfort, downtime or residual cell necrosis. It offers rapid results within 2-4 weeks after single treatments, results lasting 12+ weeks on all grades of acne

Chemical Peel

Next to muscle-relaxing injections, Chemical Peels are perhaps the most common non-invasive procedure available, offering patients an incredible complexion boost by stripping away the skin’s damaged, superficial layer and revealing a newer, fresher layer of skin beneath. One of it is Salicylic peel  , it is fantastic for treating acne and oily skin, as well as fine lines and wrinkles. A peel using Salicylic will help strip the skin of debris and oil leading to breakouts, blackheads, inflammation and irritation; drastically improving the complexion overall.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion may also be useful for people dealing with active mild-to-moderate breakouts. In addition to removing dead skin cells that can clog pores, the procedure also reduces excess oil (sebum) from these pores. However it might worsen certain type of acne , our doctors will first have to assess your condition to recommend the most suitable treatment . In certain types of acne microdermabrasion may exacerbate the  inflammation.

Acne Medications

Mild inflammatory acne may be treated by  various topical medication which includes  benzyl peroxide , topical antibiotics and topical isotretinoin either on its own, or  combined with oral antibiotics.  More severe inflammatory acne will require a more potent systemic antibiotics .

There are different reason for acne breakouts and it varies from individual to individual, we approach acne holistically and address all possible reason for the problem. It has been shown that varying levels of stress provokes acne spots. One study of female university students revealed they had more spots after the stress of end of term exams, however, it may take several weeks for the spots to show themselves after periods of stress.

Spots contain mainly acne bacteria. If you squeeze the spots this tends to force the acne bacteria into the surrounding skin where it may cause more redness and inflammation and often a much larger spot than you had in the first place. So resist squeezing, and instead apply a spot gel up to four times a day.

  • The first is when the duct from the acne gland to the skin surface known as the oil duct gets blocked. Whiteheads and blackheads are caused by a build up of oil beneath the skin surface.
  • The oil (sebaceous) gland is also stimulated to produce more oil .
  • Acne bacteria grow very easily in the warm oil build-up.
  • System imbalances affect the skin resulting in redness, painful spots, pus filled spots, and scarring.

Combination Treatment

Any individual patient may have several different combination of Acnes of various types and stages , therefore may require a combination of treatments that is customize to its needs . It is important to understand the timeline of these combination therapies as the timing of combination treatments depends on the modalities and mechanisms of action.
